The Lord Buddha was departing for earth and he sent for all the animals to
come before him. Only twelve animals came to bid him farewell. As a
reward, He named each year after them in the order which they arrived.
There is the Rat, the Ox, the Tiger, the Rabbit, the Dragon, the Snake, the
Horse, the Sheep, the Monkey, the Rooster, the Dog, and lastly the Pig.
The Chinese zodiac is literally a circle of animals. The Chinese zodiac
signs are yearly, unlike western's monthly, and each year has a different
animal name and it all correspond to a 12 year cycle. Almost similar to
the westerm system of astrology, the Chinese system uses a person's
birthdate as the basis for his sign.
